When you go into a weight reduction regimen, the goal is basically set for you. It's all about losing weight - unnecessary weight that shouldn't be there for your height. Once you've set your sight to it, it important that you define the goal with the right foresight and mindset that will make the goal achievable with the right amount of effort and determination.

Here are some tips to making your weight loss goal realistic and achievable.

o You can only shed a certain amount of weight within a given period. So don't overly aim to shed this or that poundage for the week when you know it can't be done. Note that a pound of stored fat translates to about 3600 calories. To burn 3600 calories in one week can be an uphill battle. To burn 36,000 is humanly impossible. Yet it's amazing that some dieters entertain the goal of dropping 5 pounds in a week. Realistically, all you can aim for is 1-1.5lbs for that period.

As a side note to this: while you can lose 1 to 1.5lbs a week, that's the fat. You can lose as much as 8 lbs that includes water retained in your body. So whenever you cut back on carbohydrates that promote water retention, you also attain water weight loss.

o Don't ever think that exercise can do spot reduction where you eliminate fat only in a specific area in your body, like your belly, for instance. No exercise regimen can to that. Spot reduction can only be done through surgery. So never fall into that hype that certain devices can spot reduce. They can't.

o Forget about crash diets. These are starvation diets that just impair the body's metabolism and can harm you in the long run. When metabolism ends, your body conserves the fat and calories it has in the body. So you don't lose the weight at all.

o Don't entertain any notion of giving up. Define a realistic goal for each week and stick to it. Quitting just because you don't see the goals happening won't get you anywhere. Patience and perseverance goes with any dieting regimen.
