There are as many ways for yogis to eat as there are yoga practitioners, and anyone who has learned about Ayruveda knows that there are different body types that benefit from different foods.

However, there are some guidelines that are beneficial for just about anyone who is looking to become more aware in their body. Here are 4 tips:

1. Eliminate processed foods. High Fructose Corn Syrup, which pervades nearly all processed foods, has been shown to be toxic for our bodies. Many foods have preservatives, dyes, oils, and flavorings that can cause you to be sluggish, sick, or just desensitized.

Processed foods tend to take a long time to make it through your digestive system, getting impacted in your colon and causing illnesses. They may also lead you to take other measures to balance yourself, such as taking over-the-counter headache medicine, mood-stabilizers, or to crave alcohol and sugary foods.

2. Rotate your foods. We all have our favorite superfood - maybe it's kale in the morning smoothie, coconut water, or certain fruit. Many raw vegetables, fruits, and nuts contain salicylates, a natural mildly poisonous substance meant to ward animals off of eating them.

There are a variety of other mildly poisonous substances in plants, that do not have an adverse effect on the body, unless the body never gets a break from them. When we overdo it on these foods, the body develops an inflammatory reaction, that causes illness that seems unrelated. It is best to rotate your foods, having as much variety as possible, and giving your body a break from your favorites on a regular basis.

3. Soak your seeds and nuts. Seeds and nuts are full of unactivated enzymes, and soaking them for several hours before eating them allows the germination process to begin, and the enzymes to come to life. This is an incredible support for your digestive system, and also makes the seeds and nuts incredibly tasty.

4. Give your digestive system a break. When you fast or cleanse, you offer your body a chance to re-set itself. You will find increased energy and health. This can sound counterintuitive to people who have never tried it, because we think of food as the source of our energy and think we will feel tired without it, but actually, digestion takes a lot of energy, and most people find that during a fast they can continue with many of their regular activities.

Additionally, the body gets a chance to detox, releasing toxins that have built up in our tissues and organs - this is incredibly revitalizing. It is important to couple fasting with colonics or other ways to clear the colon, because as the toxins are released from our system, they can sit in the now empty colon and get reabsorbed.
