Christmas is well and truly behind us. But don't be disheartened. It's only a few months until the next big thing: Summer. And if the season of mince pies, chocolaty indulgences and 'one too many' liquid calories left you, like Santa, with a little extra insulation around the waist area, now is the perfect time to launch a decisive attack on the fitness front, fight the fat and emerge fit and fabulous for bikini season.

Pound that fat
That paunch won't retreat without a fight; if you're serious about shifting some weight then it's time to get active and do something about it. Hit the treadmills at your fitness club, dive into the nearest swimming pool or join a dance class. Whatever you do, make sure you do something. And make it something you'll enjoy and stick to. The key to burning calories is a series of high energy consuming workouts that gets your heart racing. And even better: while you run, breaststroke or salsa, you'll shed the pounds and help your heart get healthier in one go.
Tone it down
Here's the bad news: if you want a bonny beach body this summer, it's not enough just to drop some weight. But the good news is that even a little time devoted to toning and sculpting will help get your body in shipshape condition. Try joining a yoga or Pilates club to develop your core strength and gain that all important body tone for a shape that will get you noticed.
Muscle in
Don't be afraid to pump some iron in your pursuit of perfection. Adding free weights into your regime, along with cardiovascular exercise like running and skipping, is a great way to vary your fitness training and get real results faster than you might have thought possible. Stick to the lower end of the weight scale and you don't have to end up looking like an army tank, unless you really want to.
Call for reinforcements
Sometimes we need help. And that's okay. A personal trainer might just prove to be the all important ally that sees you through to victory in the war of the waist. And there's no need to empty the treasury either. Join a good health club and you might find that personal training isn't nearly as much of a stretch as you once feared. The right trainer will come up with a foolproof battle plan and keep you motivated along the way.
Diet hard
The secret weapon in your fight against fat, a healthy diet will make the difference between a quick win, and months of drawn out stalemate. Don't starve yourself; eat a balanced diet with the right amounts of each food group, making sure you give yourself the energy you need to carry on exercising.
So there you have it: fire the opening shots in your campaign towards a healthier you today, and in a few months' time your summer-fit body will knock them all dead.
