Cellulite:
We are reminded of its existence each year when bikini season comes around. While there is no cure for that lumpy skin that plagues your thighs, there are some steps you can take to try in order to minimize its appearance.
So what is cellulite?
Cellulite occurs when fat deposits become enlarged. They press up against your connective tissue, which results in that dimpled and bumpy appearance.
Scientists are not totally sure what causes it, but some of the factors that are thought to contribute include:
• Genetics
• Tight clothing that restricts blood flow
• Smoking
• Hormones, such as estrogen
• A diet high in fat, carbs, and sodium and low in fiber
• Lack of exercise
Reducing the appearance of cellulite
Because cellulite is a result of structural elements under the skin, there is no way to eliminate it completely. Creams, drugs, and other treatments do not have any scientific evidence to back their effectiveness. However, there are several lifestyles changes you can make that will make cellulite less obvious.
Diet:
The most effective solution is to change your diet. Cellulite is fueled by fat, so losing weight and eating healthier will minimize its appearance. Eating enough fiber from healthy sources such as fruits and vegetables will help your body absorb less calories from fat. Reduce your consumption of processed and sugary foods and carbs such as bread and pasta, as these are stored as fat in your body.
Skin care:
There are also some steps that you can take to keep your skin healthy and firm. When your skin begins to lose its elasticity, cellulite becomes more noticeable. For firm skin, drink plenty of water and avoid heavy amounts of dehydrating substances such as caffeine and alcohol. Also be sure to get enough omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish such as salmon, as well as from flaxseeds and nuts. Eating dark leafy greens, peppers, celery, cucumbers, and citrus fruits will also promote the production of collagen and elastin to help your skin retain its elasticity.
Fitness:
Overall weight loss will reduce cellulite, as will replacing fat with lean muscle. Incorporate cardio and strength training into your exercise routine. Cardio such as running or biking will add extra emphasis to toning your thighs and glutes - two of the areas on your body where cellulite tends to develop. Squats, lunges, and other leg exercises will strengthen your legs and give them a harder, more toned look.
