Most people when they get started on their running program are very excited. They know that they are about to embark on a journey that will take them to better health, more energy and an overall better lifestyle. However, that excitement can lead them to do things when they start running that really can hurt them. Read on to find out what these mistakes are and how to avoid them.
The biggest mistake that beginning runners make is to try to do too much running too soon. You cannot just decide to go out running and start off by running 2 or 3 miles or more. Many people try to do this. In fact, if you have not been doing anything - it may even be hard for you to even run 1 mile.
The best way to avoid the "too much, too soon" syndrome is to start off doing a walk/run process until they can run a mile without stopping. What this means is that you run so far, walk so far, etc. You continue with more running and less walking over a period of time until you reach the time you can run non-stop.
Another mistake that runners make when they begin running is to not properly pace themselves when they run. They are excited about running and will just take off almost at a sprint. Then they will inevitably run out of steam after just a little while and be so winded that they will think that running is just not for them. To avoid this - just remember to start out slowly and pace yourself over the time that you are running.
When you begin a running program - it is important that you are wearing good shoes. Running shoes are the most important piece of equipment that a runner has. If you try to run for any period of time in shoes that are not made especially for running - you risk becoming injured. You need to have the support and cushioning that running shoes have.
Recovery after a run is important to all runners - not just beginners - but is something that is often overlooked. When you are finished running, you should do a cool down walk and some stretching. It is important for your muscles so that you can alleviate the soreness that you will get if you just go sit down after your run. Being overly sore when you go out the next day could also keep you from wanting to continue with your running.
It is so important to begin a running program correctly! And, I'd love to help! If you are thinking about beginning a running program - or know of someone who is, I invite you go to Walk To Run and take a look at a program that I put together. This helps Beginning Runners get started correctly.
